How did we get here? It seems like last week we were all about the crop tops and denim shorts that came with summer and now here we are, reviewing it all.
Last year, at the wane of 2012, we predicted just about everything that was going to be hot in 2013. From the success of Alexander Wang’s then-fresh move to Balenciaga to clear heels, more color in wardrobes and a move to a neater, more polished space, for the most part, we have achieved all of that and more – sprinkled in with a healthy dose of monochrome Miley Cyrus and Kim Kardashian’s post-maternity style.
Now that the year has come to a close, we’ve decided to take the much-anticipated walk down trend memory lane to revisit some of the trends that we loved, then hated and replaced with new ones, in addition to the trends we are still rocking currently. Though the trends change, one thing is consistent, we will look back at photos a decade from now and say “what the hell was I wearing?”
So without further ado, check out the trends we coveted in our “Trend Alerts” in reverse chronological order. Thank you, 2013.
TREND: Boyfriend coats
Kim Kardashian is still deep in her love affair with long oversize winter coats. We rounded up some of her favorite ‘fits in the coat and even gave a few shopping options for you to snag your own.
STATUS: Still lovin’ it.
Kanye made it pretty darn clear in “Bound 2″ that too much tartan wasn’t enough. With the onset of the colder winter months, we started to see celebrities like Rita Ora and Angela Simmons covet the trend from head to toe.
STATUS: Still lovin’ it.
TREND: Blush Pink
While most of Spring 2013 was dominated by black and white, something we predict will carry through to 2014, fall pulled a fast one on us by introducing blush pink as the must-have color for just about every skin tone, even North West’s – because apparently that is one of the only colors the baby of the year wears.
STATUS: Still on it, especially if Nori is rockin’ it!
TREND: Dark lips
During award season at the top of the year, we saw a lot of white dresses and scarlet lips, most notably from our girl Rooney Mara. But the trend stayed around through the months and picked right back up in the chillier months.
STATUS: Yep, still puckering these scarlet lips.
TREND: Oil slick
Metallic had its moment earlier in the year, but when oil slick came around, it was the darker more brooding cousin that everyone wanted to hang with.
STATUS: Meh, we wouldn’t be sad to see it return to the mechanic’s floor.
It started with the shoes, and then significantly made its way up to the clutches, and eventually the jackets. Rihanna was a champion of the plastic clothing, but the practicality of it fizzled when the weather took a shift.
STATUS: We’re still here for the lucite heels and clutches, but we can do without anything that isn’t a plastic raincoat.
TREND: Mixing Prints
We can celebrate Solange for championing the return of this ’90s trend, an era that absolutely ruled this year, but boy, when she did it she did it well, and others learned to make it work as well.
STATUS: Currently obsessed, but a sizzle is in the future.
TREND: Gladiator Heels
Remember when Gladiator sandals were “it?” Well this year, thanks to a man named Tom Ford, the knee-high cage heels made a return. Selena Gomez, Rihanna, and Vanessa Hudgens all worked the heck out of this one.
STATUS: Eh, over it.
TREND: Holographic everything
Metallic came back with a vengeance and brought holographs with it. It was fun for a moment, but let’s just say, we don’t want to see it live on beyond December 31st.
STATUS: Retire it.
Honorable mentions: Crop tops, destroyed denim shorts, everything grunge ’90s inspired, neon, and everything Rihanna wore this year. Everything.
