Following the leak of celebrities’ nude photos in what has been dubbed “The Fappening,” thousands of Snapchat photos and videos have been posted online after what was thought to be just a hoax by anonymous hackers.

On Friday, rumors of the massive hack hit the Internet, but on Sunday, around 98,000 files from Snapchat users were published from third-party site Snapsaved.com, which allows users to save and view snaps online, reports Mashable.

Snapchat commented on Twitter to assure users that it was not their servers that were hacked:

“Snapchatters were victimized by their use of third-party apps to send and receive Snaps, a practice that we expressly prohibit in our ToU…We can confirm that Snapchat’s servers were never breached and were not the source of these leaks.”

Snapsave and its website are no longer accessible, but they responded to the breach in their system on Facebook, saying:

“In response to recent media events and the statement made by http://pastebin.com/cJcTbNz8, I would like to inform the public that snapsaved.com was hacked, the dictionary index the poster is referring to, was never publicly available. We had a misconfiguration in our Apache server. SnapChat has not been hacked, and these images do not originate from their database.”

Some Reddit users who downloaded the leaked files have expressed disappointment in the lack of nudity, describing the photos and videos as mostly “painfully mundane,” while others are urging the links should not be shared, since there is content that could legally be considered child pornography in the files.
