Good news! We just learned that Apple has placed orders for a new 4 inch screen for their upcoming iPhone. This means that the iPhone Plus (or iPhone 5) may have a screen that is a full half inch larger than its predecessor.

The larger display may be the defining feature of the next iPhone, which makes sense since comparable smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy are becoming standard with much larger screens.

Since its inception in 2007, Apple has actually never changed the size of the phones’ screen so this is actually big news for the Cupertino, California-based company.

A new iPhone with a larger screen wouldn’t necessarily mean that Apple is making changes to its products because of what rivals are doing, said Mizuho Investors Securities analyst Nobuo Kurahashi when he spoke with The Wall Street Journal Asia:

“The smartphone market has become diverse, but the iPhone still sets the agenda,” with the whole industry watching Apple’s every move, he said. “The iPhone’s strength lies in the overall experience including its user interface and applications.”

Production of the phones with the larger screens are set to roll out next month, however when the actual phone gets released is up in the air. Only time will tell what other changes have been made to the popular smartphone when it is released later this year.
