Since the f8 conference last week, the internet has been swirling with rumors that Facebook will soon be charging its users to log-in and check their profile.

Because so many of our readers are also Facebook users, we thought you should know: This is one FALSE rumor!

You see, not only did Facebook tell users today — via it’s personal account’s status update — that “Facebook will always be free” but it also just doesn’t make sense that Facebook would start charging users. Based on the fact that Facebook is currently making billions of dollars a year selling ads to its +700 million users. Charging users to log-in would mean a dramatic decrease in user retention (i.e, people telling Facebook “Umm no thanks. I’m out!”), which would in turn mean that Facebook ads would be much less valuable.

What started these rumors you ask? These rumors which have the blogosphere on fire? Those random, all-caps, spammy Facebook statuses that people copy/paste on to other people’s walls.

Here’s an example of what’s being said:

“FACEBOOK JUST RELEASED THEIR PRICE GRID FOR MEMBERSHIP. $9.99 PER MONTH FOR GOLD MEMBER SERVICES, $6.99 PER MONTH FOR SILVER MEMBER SERVICES, $3.99 PER MONTH FOR BRONZE MEMBER SERVICES, FREE IF YOU COPY AND PASTE THIS MESSAGE BEFORE MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. WHEN YOU SIGN ON TOMORROW MORNING YOU WILL BE PROMPTED FOR PAYMENT INFO…IT IS OFFICIAL IT WAS EVEN ON THE NEWS. FACEBOOK WILL START CHARGING DUE TO THE NEW PROFILE CHANGES”

False. False. False. Facebook is Free. Go enjoy it.

And if you haven’t tried it check out the new timeline before your friends do!
