Nicki Minaj has become the latest powerful figure to flourish under the gaze of noted Italian artist Francesco Vezzoli, and the results can be seen on the cover of W magazine’s art and fashion issue for November.

Several years ago Vezzoli produced a trailer for a mock remake of Gore Vidal’s Caligula featuringCourtney Love. He also made a faux-fragrance commercial starring Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams. Actress Eva Mendes was even transformed into Bernini’s masterpiece The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa for his Prada Foundation installation at this year’s Venice Biennale. For the MOCA’s 30th-anniversary gala in 2009, Vezzoli re-imagined Lady Gaga as a latter-day Ballets Russes star.

Now Vezzoli has transformed Nicki into an 18th-century courtesan, four to be exact!

With the addition of Nicki to his resume, Vezzoli beautifully links contemporary icons to historic representations of women in art.

W’s fashion director Edward Enninful was the stylist of the shoot and he dressed Minaj in vintage ball gowns and jewels by designers like Vera Wang and Dior Haute Couture.
