We got an exclusive interview with the rising star, who talks to us about her role in the inspirational movie 5 Star Day alongside Cam Gigandet. Brooklyn spills the beans about acting and lets us know what’s going on with her future in music!

GlobalGrind: Describe your character in 5 Star Day.
Brooklyn Sudano: My character is a young mom named Yvette Montgomery who works in Chicago at a facility that works with inner city kids. We weave all these characters together with the lead being Cam Gigandet, who’s on a mission. He had a five star day for his birthday and it turned out to be awful. Basically, a five star day in astrology means you’re going to have the best day, but he turned out to have the worst day of his life. He goes out and finds three people that were also born on that day at the same hospital he was born in and I was one of those people. He contacts me and finds me, and I’m a little bit suspicious at first. My character has been having a hard time already and through our interaction he helps me heal from an event that was really hard for me. His help allows me to begin that process in forgiving myself. The main theme of this film is destiny. Is it determined? Is it something that we determine for ourselves? Can good come out of a bad situation? It just kind of poses all these questions.
It definitely sounds like a really inspirational film to watch!
Yeah, I think these are all fundamental questions that as humans we have to ask ourselves. Is there something greater than ourselves? Is it ‘written in the stars’ or do we have a say in it? I think it’s a nice journey to see these characters and how their lives are interwoven and to see how a bad situation can create something good.
What made you want to take on this role?
I really liked the idea of the questions that it posed. I believe in God, so it’s always something where I ask myself ‘Is this what I’m destined to do? Is this what I’ve been created to do?’ These are questions that I’ve asked myself. I thought that that would be something that other people can relate to. Yvette as a character shows that we all make mistakes and do things that we’re not proud of. It’s that struggle that I’m doing with her that I really could relate to. I’m a bit of a perfectionist so I have a hard time letting go of the things that I do that haven’t met my own expectations. So, it was something that I could really relate to that character.
Being that you’ve done this movie, and you’ve also done some sitcoms, which do you enjoy doing better?
I have to be honest, I really enjoy all of it. As an actor, you try to push yourself and experience all different kinds of things and characters. The different formats allow you to do that in a different way. So I’d say I really enjoyed all of it. I think that after awhile if you do a lot of heavy things like drama, you need something light, fun, and entertaining to make people laugh. I like to make people think, but also to make them laugh and entertain them. I think each format structures you in a different way.
It’s great to see actors like yourself progress and go from funny to dramatic so you can see that you’re an all around actor.
Right. I strive to be somebody that can really relate to people on all those different levels. People think that comedy is easy, but comedy is way harder than drama! I have to be really in it. You have to be really committed and either go big or go home!

We know you’ve been involved with music and done some yourself. Do you have any future plans with it or anything like that?
Music is obviously going to be a part of my life. It’s how I was brought up and raised. I come from a very musical family. My sister and her husband are in a band called “Johnny Swim” and they tour around. Music is definitely an integral part of my life. I don’t know when or how or what it’s going to be, but I’m sure at some point that I’ll work on some music. There are so many shows and movies that are incorporating music into their production, so I’m sure that you’ll catch me singing at some point. Singing for me is kind of like breathing to the point where I have to shut up every once in awhile because the people around me get annoyed. It’s definitely a big passion of mine.
In your spare time, what do you do when you’re not acting or doing anything like that?
I’m a big reader. I like to read, I love books. I even cook a lot. I’m pretty domestic actually like Martha Stewart! I like to craft and I like to make things. Also a big part of what I enjoy is philanthropy and working with different organizations and trying to spread the word on different causes that I think are important.
Being that you have a Martha Stewart side in you, what’s you favorite food that you have to have if you were to make something for yourself?
Well, I’m half Italian. My dad’s from Brooklyn, and that was a big influence in our family. Pasta is always a kind of go-to for me, which I think is for most of America at this point. I think I’d do like a fresh tomato sauce that’s just super simple, with some olive oil, garlic, some eggplant or something like that, and some fresh basil, and just put that over the whole grain pasta to maintain those healthy habits. You can’t go wrong with pasta. It’s so good! My sister and I made some the other day.
Who would you interview if you could interview anyone, living or dead?
Wow, that’s a tough question! There’s so many people that I look up to and aspire. I’m a big fan of Oprah. I’ve watched her since I was a kid. I think she’s done amazing things and she’s a woman who has used her voice to bring awareness and to educate people and bring unity through that education. It’s something I would hope to do so. I’d probably have to say Jesus though. I want to talk to Jesus one-on-one! I do that on a day to day basis, but in person would be pretty cool. I would think most people would want to talk to Jesus!
