Another major university sports program is now involved in a sex scandal. This time it is the Syracuse University men’s basketball program that is under fire.

Allegations have been made by two men, Bobby Davis and his step brother Mike Lang, against former assistant head coach Bernie Fine that claim he molested them.

To their credit, Syracuse University wasted no time in firing Fine.

But Head coach Jim Boeheim’s comments were really disturbing. He called into question Davis’ motives claiming he is only doing this for money.

He also called him a liar and seemingly made light of the situation when he said, “This is alleged to have occurred…what? Twenty years ago?  It might be 26 years ago.

Am I in the right neighborhood? So are we supposed to what? Stop the presses 26 years later?”  The callous and flippant way he is dismissing the victims is totally unacceptable. And for that the university should fire him.

After all, Penn State fired Joe Paterno when allegations surfaced that his defensive coordinator had molested children as well. And Joe Pa never attacked the children.

Jim Boeheim came out the next day and tried to backpedal from his insensitive comments but it’s too little too late. To me, this is like blaming the woman who is raped for dressing too provocatively.  It’s just wrong.

So far, Syracuse University has not said whether or not Boeheim will be fired. But sources close to Boeheim say he has no intention of stepping down.

Considering his earlier remarks it’s no surprise that he would take such a defiant stand.

With the Penn State scandal still fresh in everyone’s mind and considering the vile nature of these allegations I feel it is only proper for Jim Boeheim to step down as head coach of the Syracuse men’s basketball team.

He will not be doing the team or the school any favors if he stays. In fact he seems to be hurting them.

When parents send their kids off to college, whether they play sports or not, they are entrusting their children’s well being to the faculty of that university.

So far, Penn State and Syracuse have broken that trust. It makes me wonder if this is just the beginning of a string of sex scandals that will pop up at more universities.

For the sake of all the kids, I hope I am wrong.
