Promising basketball star Michael Haynes, 22, was shot and killed last night right in front of his home while trying to break up a fight.

Haynes, who played basketball at Washington High School in NYC, was shot on the Far South Side near 116th and Vincennes, which isn’t far from the basketball standout’s home.
According to ABC News, witnesses say he was trying to break up a fight over a necklace Thursday night when he was struck in the chest, wrist and lower back. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.
Witnesses say he was an innocent victim caught up in a violent situation. Detectives are investigating; no suspects are in custody.
In May, Haynes had committed to Iona College in New York to play division one basketball. Last season, Haynes played for the Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa.
Haynes, who originally committed to the University of Texas-El Paso but never played for the Miners, was ranked the No. 11 recruit in the state of Illinois by ChicagoHoops.com following his junior season at Washington High School, during which he averaged 17 points and 22 rebounds.
