Escape From Alcatraz

The Rock, as it is more popularly known, was once a notorious maximum-security prison. It sits on an island in the middle of the bay. Famous inmates have included Al Capone, Doc and Ma Barker and the birdman of Alcatraz. No one ever escaped; although 34 prisoners tried, and myth has it that three succeeded but were not acknowledged. Be aware that there is only one official tour operator – Alcatraz Cruises. Book well in advance. Admission price includes a haunting audio tour that features interviews with former inmates.

Visit The California Academy of Sciences

The California Academy of Sciences is considered the greenest museum in the world. The US$500 million building, which opened in 2008, is by Italian architect Renzo Piano and features a living roof, a 21st-century planetarium, aquarium, rainforest and natural history museum.
