On March 12th, the European Union Parliament will vote on a revolutionary law that could set precedent for all potential bans on pornography in the media.

The goal of the law is to encourage gender equality by combatting all gender stereotypes, including those presented on the internet and television.

The bill calls for the establishment of new agencies with “a mandate to impose effective sanctions on companies and individuals promoting the sexualisation of girls.”

Opponents of the proposal believe that the law could allow internet service providers to police their customers in an unjust way.

“The devil is in the detail,” Christian Engstrom, EU parliamentarian from Sweden’s Pirate Party, wrote. “Although I completely agree that eliminating outdated gender stereotypes in the EU is a worthwhile goal, I will be voting against this resolution next week.”

Many believe that the term “media” is too vague and should be defined more clearly in the legislation.

Critics state that blocking pornographic content on the internet “may create demand for an underground porn industry, unregulated and most certainly affiliated with other illegal activities.”

Do you think this law would be effective?
