It’s not on the menu, but it may be in your plate.
West Village restaurant, Alta, is the reason more than 200 people have reportedly needed to receive the Hepatitis A vaccination this weekend in NYC. According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, an employee at the restaurant in charge of handling desserts is believed to have the virus.
The health department informed the public of possible exposure to thr virus and offered free vaccinations throughout the weekend.
Hepatitis A is rarely fatal but it can cause liver disease, jaundice, a weakened immune system, stomach pains, fatigue, nausea, and diarrhea
Alta restaurant owner says the infected employee is no longer “on the premises” but the owner has not provided any futher comments. It is believed that as many as 450 patrons ordered the allegedly tainted desserts.
There were no confirmed cases of infected guests and it has not been confirmed whether or not the virus was actually in the food.
However, anyone who has ordered deserts is urged to see a physician. Happy Monday!
