Jahi McMath, the 13-year-old girl in the middle of an intense battle between hospital and family to keep her on life support, may have been released from the hospital, but things could get worse.

The teenager who was declared brain-dead after a routine tonsil surgery in December is weaker than first thought and, according to her lawyer, she “may not make it through the day.” After release, she was transferred to private health facility.

Chris Dolan said Jahi, pronounced brain dead after a tonsil operation, had ‘deteriorated’ more than expected because her body had been ‘starved’ while on a ventilator at Children’s Hospital, in Oakland, California.

“Jahi is in worse shape than we thought,” Dolan said. “The hospital’s withdrawal of nutrients has caused her to deteriorate more rapidly than we thought. It is just sad. They have starved her.”

It’s unclear if doctors hired by the family are going to insert a feeding tube, but Dolan said they were assessing the situation. If you recall, Children’s Hospital refused to do any procedures on Jahi because they declared her “deceased.”

“This is a deceased young woman,” Children’s Hospital Oakland spokesman Sam Singer told ABC 7.

“No amount of food, medicine, medical machinery, time or hope is going to bring back her back. So it’s really wrong and unethical for Mr Dolan to mislead the family and the public that there’s any amount of hope or any food that could possibly bring back this deceased young woman.”

We wish the family the best as they face this difficult situation.
