Thank You President Obama for Ending the War

by Elaine Carter

“War! Huh! Good God ya’ll. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing!  War, it ain’t nothing but a heartbreaker. War, it’s got one friend, that’s the undertaker. War, has shattered many a young mans dreams. Made him disabled, bitter and mean.  Life is much to short and precious, to spend fighting wars these days. War can’t give life, it can only take it away”  This song “War” performed by Edwin Starr was written back in 1970 to protest the Vietnam War.  Flash forward to 2010, the lyrics ring true today.

In this new millennium of an “evolved” computer aged, high tech society, why should we resort to combat to resolve differences?  What in the hell was the Iraq War for anyway? Oil?  War destroys life and land.  The only people who benefit from war are the companies that provide ammunition, artillery and other war supplies to keep the battles going.

More than one million Iraqi people were killed, most of them innocent civilians.  Over 5000 American troops and allied soldiers perished.  Over 100,000 American troops injured.  From the trauma of dealing with the Iraq War, 18 American vets commit suicide each day.

The Iraq War cost three TRILLION dollars.  Think of all of the schools and homeless shelters that could have been built, food pantries, medicine for senior citizens, job training and other constructive services and programs that $3,000,000,000,000 could have been put towards.

When President Clinton left office, the nation’s budget was balanced, with surplus funds in the nations coffers.  Bush takes over and the massive debt begins and so does a very costly and deadly war.

Obama to the rescue.  He promised to end the war, and that he did. President Obama knows that ending the war is the moral and right thing to do.  No more shed blood.  The troops can now come home and rejoin their families and loved ones.  The Iraqi people now have relief from being occupied and living in a war zone.  The way is clear to help the Iraqis rebuild their lives again.  </p
