Twitter’s quest to own our lives has just taken another sneaky step.

In a smart move, the company has filed a claim to trademark the word “subtweet.” Subtweeting refers to tweeting (usually mean) things about someone without mentioning their handle, a common practice among arguing couples. It typically ends with the defendant tweeting something to the effect of “@ me tho.” We’ve all seen it.

On October 30, the trademark paperwork was submitted, but no one is quite sure what Twitter’s intentions are. Mashable reached out to Twitter to ask what the deal is, and hilariously received the response: “When you need to protect your namespace from people who would misuse it. #keepingit100

Twitter will likely own the word in a few weeks, but you’re still free to tweet passive aggressive comments about your boss as much as you want.
