George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch volunteer who was acquitted of murder in the shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin in 2012, will not face charges in his latest domestic violence incident, the State Attorney’s Office said.
The 31-year-old was arrested and accused of aggravated assault in Lake Mary, Fl. for allegedly throwing a bottle of wine at his girlfriend on Jan. 5. Police discovered the two were involved in a domestic altercation when officers pulled Zimmerman’s girlfriend over for a routine traffic stop.
That’s when she told officers Zimmerman threw the bottle at her, saying she should have known better than to get involved with him and calling Zimmerman a “psycho.”
The woman, who has not been identified, reportedly said Zimmerman was angry because she wanted to end the relationship.
“While it is clear that the officers had probable cause to arrest Mr. Zimmerman which was affirmed by the circuit court judge at initial appearances, the subsequent recantation by the victim of her initial statement along with new documents provided by the victim and her attorney precludes my office from proceeding further,” State Attorney Phil Archer said.
This isn’t the first time Zimmerman has been cleared of charges in a domestic violence incident. Just months after his acquittal, Zimmerman was accused of smashing his estranged wife’s iPad during an argument. He has also been pulled over three times for traffic violations and was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, battery, and criminal mischief after his then-girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe, said he pointed a gun at her face during an argument.
