What motivated a 20-year-old deaf student who attended Lone Star College in Houston, TX to haul off and stab at least 14 of his peers?

According to investigators, it was a fantasy of Dylan Quick‘s.

Yesterday, Quick was charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after stabbing 14 victims with a razor-type knife that some describe as an X-Acto knife or a box cutter. His confession to the police that this had been a fantasy of his leads them to believe that it was premeditated.

“According to the statement the suspect voluntarily gave investigators, he has had fantasies of stabbing people to death since he was in elementary school,” a statement from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said. “He also indicated that he has been planning this incident for some time.”

In fact, Donna Hawkins, an official with the Harris County Prosecutor’s Office, said that Quick was described as a shy loner who had planned these attacks since elementary school.

It is unclear if his mother, Tiffany Quick, or other family members and friends were aware of his fantasies, but a profile posted on the university website just a week before his stabbing spree painted Quick as a success story for the school’s outreach work within the local community.

It tells of a happy, home-schooled student who loved to read books, but was fearful of socializing because of his disability.

“Initially reluctant to participate, Dylan was home-schooled and very shy, and Tiffany wanted him to be in a setting to socialize with other teens and also to be intellectually stimulated.”

The profile also talked about Quick’s hobbies, none of which indicate that he may have had a dark desire harboring inside.

“In addition to a love a math, he still has a passion for reading, cultivated and nurtured in the library book clubs. His room at home, he explains, barely contains his 1,000+ collection of books. In the future he plans to build and host an online international book club to connect people of all ages from around the world. He was planning to transfer to the University of Houston after earning his associate degree.

He listed his favorite book as The Phantom of the Opera and talked about his love of bands such as Green Day and U2.”

Police are still investigating the spree and Quick remains in custody. Reportedly, the spree only ended after the attack was thwarted by a broken knife.

The Houston Chronicle also reported fellow student Desmond Lago, who had been arrested by campus police on a trespassing offense, claim he had spoken to Quick, who told him of his thwarted intention to kill his victims.

‘We were sitting on the floor while a cop sat in a chair,’ Lago told the newspaper ‘I asked him, did you do it? And he said yes. Then the cop told us to stop talking to each other.’

When the officer looked away, Lago said, he asked Quick, ‘What were you trying to do? He said he was trying to go on a killing spree but the (expletive) blade broke.’

Pieces of the blade were found in some of the victims’ wounds. Two remain in critical condition. The school, which was on lockdown the day of the stabbings, will be open and operating on a regular schedule for Wednesday’s classes.

Our thoughts and prayers to the Lone Star campus and the victims of yesterday’s attack.
