After the murder-suicide of Kansas City Chiefs Linebacker Jovan Belcher rocked the NFL community earlier this weekend, NBC broadcaster Bob Costas used his halftime segment on Sunday Night Football to advocate for gun control.

Costas’ opinion on gun control, an extremely controversial issue, immediately sparked a debate on social media.

During his brief 90-second segment during halftime, Costas paraphrased and quoted a piece by Fox Sports columnist Jason Whitlock.

STORY: Who Is Jovan Belcher?

After praising the column, Costas said:

In the coming days, Jovan Belcher’s actions and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe. If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.

Many criticized the broadcaster for using the opportunity to express his personal views on a program meant for entertainment, while others praised him for speaking out so candidly on the incident.
