The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is investigating Upshaw’s death, as the gunshot wound seems self-inflicted but it seems too soon to dismiss foul play.

Warren Strain, a MBI spokesman, said, “The crime scene unit is processing the residence and the investigators are conducting interviews and following leads. It would be premature to make any statement regarding the investigation at this point.”

With the investigation on-going, the family, friends, and colleagues of Upshaw express their deepest admiration for her role as a lawmaker, a friend, and a grandmother.

“Jessica was a fixture in her seat on the back row of the chamber, where she passionately championed causes for her district and the state. This is an instance where replacement is not possible. Jessica will be sorely missed,” said Rep Bobby Moak.

Upshaw will truly be missed by family and friends, as she is remembered as an intelligent, vibrant and dedicated person who lived to serve her community. Our condolences.
