A man has died and two were injured Wednesday after reports of a machete attack in a London street that some eyewitnesses described as a beheading.
Eyewitnesses told ITV News that a man was attacked in the street by two individuals who were later shot by officers and are seriously injured.
Local lawmaker Nick Raynsford said the dead man was a soldier serving at Woolwich barracks, but the Ministry of Defence could not confirm this.
Several other British news sources are also reporting that a serving British soldier was hacked to death with a machete. The BBC is saying that the man was wearing a “Help for Heroes” t-shirt and was from a nearby barracks in Woolwich, South London.
Two UK government officials confirm the attack appears to be motivated by radical Islam as the UK Home Secretary says there’s a “strong indication” the attack was an act of terrorism and it “will not go unpunished.”
