Early Monday morning, Hennadiy Adolfovych Kernes, the mayor of Kharkiv, the second biggest city in Ukraine, was shot in the back while jogging. Kernes is currently in surgery and is said to be “fighting for his life.” Officials are unaware the motive behind the shooting or who was involved. Meanwhile, as the debate increases in Ukraine, the U.S. has issued more sanctions on Russia. President Barack Obama said in a press conference in Manila, “The goal is to not go after Mr. Putin personally. The goal is to change his calculus with respect to how the current actions that he’s engaging in could have an adverse impact on the Russian economy over the long haul and to encourage him to actually walk the walk and not just talk the talk when it comes to diplomatically resolving the crisis in Ukraine.” [USA Today]

A woman from Ontario is suing the family of the teen she killed with her car. Sharlene Simon was driving at 55 mph in a 50 mph zone when she struck teens Brandon Majewski, 17, and his 16-year-old friends Richard McLean and Jake Roberts. Majewski lost his life, but Simon claims that she is the one suffering. Simon is suing Majewski’s estate for $1.35 million dollars. [Huffington Post]

Pope Francis sent a message to his millions of followers on Twitter about the dangers of inequality. The Pope tweeted, “Inequality is the root of social evil.” His comment comes just as Russia claims that Ukraine is reaching a Civil War and plans to step in. [Twitter]

Another woman from China has attempted to flush her newborn baby down the toilet. The woman went to the hospital and complained of stomach pains. Not realizing she was pregnant, the woman ended up giving birth in a bathroom and tried to flush the baby down the toilet while the umbilical cord was still attached. The baby and mother are said to be doing fine. [Daily Mail]

A teacher from Houston, Texas gave one of her students a special birthday gift that left her behind bars. Felicia Smith, 42, was charged with an improper relationship with a student when she gave one of her students a lap dance for his birthday. Smith says she was talked into it by her students. The dance lasted about four minutes with Smith telling the teen, “I love you baby, Happy Birthday.” Smith posted a $30,000 bond Thursday and was removed from her position as the investigation continues.
