Washington is currently locked in a debate over a federal government "stimulus" package but millions of Americans in poverty remain locked out of that debate.

If we are to stimulate our economy for real growth, we must empower more Americans to move up the economic ladder. We won't be healthy as a nation until we do. Republicans have in the past been accused of caring more about the statistics that define the poor than the reforms necessary to lift the poor out of poverty. However, if we are to be true to the foundational principles of the Party of Lincoln--free enterprise, individual liberties and access to equal opportunities--then we know that any efforts to improve our economy must include a pathway of empowerment and opportunity for the poor.

Some have faith in government in order to create such a pathway; Republicans have faith in people. Thus, a truly effective stimulus package would rely less on government solutions and more on individual solutions that encourage enterprise, job training and educational opportunities for those seeking to free themselves from the shackles of poverty. HUD Secretary Jack Kemp once noted, "the purpose of a great party is not to defeat the other party but to provide superior ideas, principled leadership and a compelling cause." The Republican Party now has an obligation to provide solutions and ideas that demonstrate our capacity to lead on behalf of the poor of America and to provide them a pathway to legacy wealth creation. No cause can be more compelling than that!

  • WHAT WE NEED IS FOR SOMEONE TO SPEAK TRUTH. WE ARE A CONSUMER NATION. ALL OF US INCLUDING THE GOVERNMENT. CONSUME MEANS IN THE DICTIONARY TO USE UP WITHOUT REPLACING. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SAY "MADE IN AMERICA? " WE HAVE TO HAVE THE LATEST GADGETS, WE DON'T SAVE A DIME AND WE BORROW FROM THOSE WHO AREN'T ARE BIGGEST FANS, CHINA. WHAT WE NEED IS TO BE REMINDED THAT THE CHANGE WE NEED IS FROM A CONSUMER, DEBT DRIVEN SOCIETY TO ONCE AGAIN TO BE A NATION OF PRODUCERS AND SAVERS. YES YOU CAN DO WITHOUT THE NEWEST CELL PHONE, THE EXTRA CABLE BOX IN THE BATHROOM, AND FIX YOUR CAR AND RIDE IT TILL THE WHEELS FALL OFF. THE CATCH WAS NOBODY WANTED TO LOOK POOR THOUGH THEY WERE SO THAT KEPT UP WITH THE JONES'S INSTEAD OF STACKING THEM FEW DOLLARS THEY HAVE TILL IT GREW AND THEN TOOK THAT MONEY AND STARTED A SMALL BUSINESS. DON'T TELL ME IT CAN'T HAPPEN. I SEE BROTHERS IN ALTLANTA SELLING DONUTS AND INCENSE ON THE STREETS FOR A LIVING.
  • I AM A AFRICAN AMERICAN REPUBLICAN AND OF COURSE I AM IN THE MINORITY TO SAY THE LEAST. I ASK MY PEERS THE HISTORY OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, STARTING WITH 1784 TO THE LATE 60S. I ALSO ASK THEM IS IT BETTER FOR AN ENTIRE RACE TO BELONG TO ONE PARTY OR SHOULD WE HAVE BOTH MAJOR PARTIES COMPETING FOR OUR VOTES EACH ELECTION CYCLE. I LOOK AT IT LIKE THIS, IF YOUR MARRIED TO A PERSON FOR 20 YRS AND HE KNOWS YOUR NOT GOING TO LEAVE HIM, HE WILL LIKELY TAKE YOU FOR GRANTED BUT IF A NEW GUY STARTS COURTING YOU WITH A FEW GOODIES TO COME TO HIM. YOU WILL ONLY BENIFIT CAUSE YOUR HUSBAND NOW SEE'S HE HAS TO STEP UP HIS GAME OR FACE LOSING YOU. WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT? SO MR. STEELE. START OFFERING, I HOPE MY PEOPLE WILL AT LEAST LISTEN!
  • Clearly Steele isn't interested in engaging the Young Americans that frequent Global Grind. The evidence is in how he posted a bunch of Right Wing Propaganda only to ignore the responses to said Propaganda. Where is the Dude? He hasn't responded to anyones comments! his conduct in this regard is disgusting if you ask me.

I Strongly Recommend everyone involved in this conversation watch the Movie ZEIGEIST-THE FEDERAL RESERVE on YouTube! then you will have a better understanding of how both The Democrats & Rebublicans are unable to bring about significant change despite the campaign rhetoric. Follow The Money, There Resides The Power!
  • It’s great to see Michael Steele and the Republican Party take the time to reach out to the hip-hop community. I think for too long there has been a love - hate relationship between the two, which hasn’t served the interest of the GOP or the interest of African Americans community. Blacks weren’t going to vote republican and republicans weren’t going to waste their time trying to convince us otherwise. It is great to see a new approach here. Hopefully your efforts will go a long way to promote dialogue that will be helpful for the GOP and for the black community. There is a lot of work to do, so I hope you’re up for the task.

I think it is important for us, as African Americans to have diversity in thought regarding issues such as economics and public policy. Without such diversity, then it is impossible to choose the policies that will lead us to prosperity. While there is numerous economic literature to support the innate inefficiency of government and the role well-intended government policies have played in destroying our community, causing economic downturns, and creating a culture of dependency rather than empowerment, that information normally doesn’t trickle down to us and very rarely has the Republican party addressed us with solutions.

  • I do agree with helping your self out of poverty, but you have to understand everything cost, and the poorer you are the more it's going to cost you. If you don't have the money they will loan it to you but it's going to cost you. and that's another thing the loan companies should be held accountable for a lot of this mess. They have been give people loans knowing that one miss payment is going to set us back a life time.
I know I don't have the answers. But you Mr. Steele bloging to us has to be a good start. Thank you.
  • Whats up with the stimulus package?
    • i think thats the thought on a lot of peoples mind lately. So many dont know what a the stimulus package is.
  • Hey Michael,

I'd like to get your thoughts on this statement:

In an interview with Hotline, Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) said the Republican party will have to be come an “insurgency” to counter Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, and added that the Taliban can serve as “a model”: Insurgency, we understand perhaps a little bit more because of the Taliban,” Sessions said during a meeting yesterday with Hotline editors. “And that is that they went about systematically understanding how to disrupt and change a person’s entire processes. And these Taliban — I’m not trying to say the Republican Party is the Taliban. No, that’s not what we’re saying. I’m saying an example of how you go about [sic] is to change a person from their messaging to their operations to their frontline message. And we need to understand that insurgency may be required when the other side, the House leadership, does not follow the same commands, which we entered the game with.”

This is your Party the Republicans. As their leader do you support these thoughts? His statement as well as some made by you and other Republican hacks leads me to believe that the The Repugs are the enemy of the United States and should be treated as such.

I may re-consider my opposition to waterboarding. At least long enough to wipe the smirks off their faces.

What’s with the smirk anyway? They all do it.These guys are worthless and unpatiotic. If they cannot have their selfish way, they had rather destroy the country. They lost and haven’t figured out that the American people have rejected their failed policies. They will lose more in 2010.

    • Funny how some of those "failed policies" are still going to be upheld under the current administration.
  • The problem to me is the Republican Party. The first Stimulas Plan you all laid out went to corporate executives and CEO's but you won't answer for that. Instead your critical of Obama and his plan. I understand the part which you all have a problem with as far as the 600 million or billion to federal cars, I dont agree with that. But I do agree with the mass transit, global warming and the sexual health part just to name a few. If you have to make federal buldings green, be my guest. But Americans are fed up with this mess Bush created. I wouldn't have bailed out GM or Dodge, if they built better products for the American people than I would give them the benefit of doubt. And I ask you this Mr. Steele, why are they making you chairman now? To me it's because your African American and they hope to sway our votes in 4 years, with you(African American), as possibly a presidental hopeful. People are suffering out here to keep their homes and jobs. Why didn't the Republicans do something about the housing crisis with the first bill? As I stated you gave it away and didn't give a dam about the American people now everything is on Obama's shoulders. The man can't even make it out his first 30 days without conflict in the Republican Party instead of support. Work the plan out with Obama and help these suffering people since your chairman now. Make a difference, Im from from MD and you didn't make a difference here! When you help America think of it as you also helping the world out this crisis. Thank You.
    • I wonder what you mean by working it out with Obama? Considering that working something out with someone doesn't mean giving into their demands just because they "lost", what is your definition? The Republicans fouled up, and hopefully, have learned their lesson. What I find amazing is that while most are ready to criticize the Republicans for the first TARP bill, they forget that it was the Democrats that were in the majority in the House and Senate when the bill was signed by Bush. That means the Democrats wrote the bill, not the Republicans. So the blame should fall on both parties. Sorry to burst your bubble.
  • its about to get real ugly out here in these streets, i hope you all have a second hustle

  • I so badly want to give you the benefit of the doubt but leading off with pearls like this:

<<a truly effective stimulus package would rely less on government solutions and more on individual solutions that encourage enterprise...>>

Education & training is the key to eradicating poverty, PERIOD. And to be clear, it IS government's responsibility to provide access to quality education opportunities.
    • Education is important, both parties recognize that. That won't affect the economy until years later. What he is talking about is jump-starting the economy NOW. Part of the reason why we got to this point is due to the Government's involvment in private enterprise. It is the private businesses that stimulate the economy, never has been the Government.
    • i patially agree with you, education is a vital key. The republicans want competition within and out of the public school system where the democrats have total control due to the teachers unions being in bed with them. They fear competition and tell you that THEY would lose jobs if they had to compete. All at the expense of the kids who half of them can't spell cat. So maybe you can adopt a change in that system where you could go to any school of your choice and the government money will follow you instead of you being stuck in the school that is in your zip code.
  • since gas prices are going back up, what should i think of the economy? is it getting better like we had hope when obama won? whatever it is, our economy and job opportunities definitely needs to get better. the stimulus package might be a risk taken, but it'll bring us into a new and different direction...
    • The question i have to you is what direction and at what cost? Remember they are borrowing money not using money we don't have. Yes many of the programs the dems want to fund is good and noble but all at once? it's like Im gonna buy my kids all of the toys they want without a job, and in debt so bad it will take my kids years to pay it off. Why would i do that? would you? well that's what the government is doing. partly because of a precieved need but also to make you like them more!
  • Oh please Michael Steele...Your a joke and an embarassment. There's nothing wrong with being a Republican but what you type here and the venom you spew on TV it's like your trying to hoodwink us. Your right with this comment "Some have faith in government in order to create such a pathway; Republicans have faith in people. Thus, a truly effective stimulus package would rely less on government solutions and more on individual solutions that encourage enterprise, job training and educational opportunities for those seeking to free themselves from the shackles of poverty." However none of that is the Republican platform. You guys are by no means the Party of ideas. Your platform is old & tired. You can come on Global Grind and pretend that you care but you will continue to spew the Republican talking points. I saw you on CNN the other day with your foolishness about how not in the history of mankind has the Government ever created a job. As the former Lt. Gov of Maryland was that not a job created by the Govt.? Are the 1.3 million military memebers not Govt. employees? What about the different career employees in Government? Small business & free enterprise may create the bulk of wealth in this country but don't dismiss what can & should be done by the Government..Your Republican talking points and ideals have been rejected..
    • I'm sorry, but the Government doesn't create jobs. Because the Government can only function based upon the taxes they collect from individuals (like you and I) every single Government job, including the military, is a result of private business. Think about it, your tax dollars are paying the salaries of every person working for the Government. The Government never has paid your salary. Therefore, the Government does not create jobs.
  • You cant just change things as 99problems.org explains it takes time to makechanges like that
  • Sometimes I think Republicans think that the African American community is stupid and will fall for anything. Just because you put a Black face on the Republican party doesn't mean that anything has really changed regarding their lack of inclusiveness towards others. Really, they had no choice other than to pick an African American whether it was Mr. Steele or Mr. Blackwell, if they want any kind of chance of competing in the next election. That is what this is really about. Can't win an election with only 5 southern states, right? While Mr. Steele was giving his acceptance speech, how many people of color did you see in the audience? I don't know Mr. Steele but even if he means well, do you really think the real power behind the Republican party is going to let him make significant changes so their party can become more inclusive? Sure, there may be some cosmetic changes to appear more open but behind the scenes, I don't think much will change. Prove me wrong.
    • A black face was just put on the Democratic Party and we "fell for it"....

It's ironic, given the history of the Democrat and Republican Parties, the core principles, and taxation, that the African American people can be as easily decieved. Our people have more in common with Republicans than they realize, but they have not paid attention to us since the civil rights movement. Understandably, most of us don't trust them.
    • SOMETIME I THINK THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY IS STUPID MYSELF BUT FOR DIFFERENT REASONS. FIRST AFTER THEY TURNED WATER HOSES AND DOGS ON US IN THE LATE 60S FOR MARCHING OVER THE EDMOND PETUS BRIDGE, PICKED OUR BLACK LEADERS TO GET US TO JOIN THEM INSTEAD OF THE PARTY THAT FREED OUR GRANDPARENTS, AND CONVINCED US THAT FOR A BLOCK OF GOVERNMENT CHEESE AND SOME FOOD STAMPS, YES I GOT SOME MYSELF, AND A ONCE A MONTH CHECK THAT INCREASED BY THE AMOUNT OF KIDS YOU HAD AND PENTALIZED YOU IF YOU HAD A FATHER FIGURE IN YOUR HOME. TOLD YOU YOU MUST SEND YOUR CHILD TO THE PUBLIC SCHOOL IN YOUR ZIP CODE NO MATTER IF THE SCHOOL ACROSS TOWN WAS BETTER, AND IN ADDITION SCRAPE YOUR MORAL AND RELIGIOUS BELIEFS BECAUSE YOUR SUPPOSE TO HAVE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. SO THOUGH GOD SAYS MAN IS THE HEAD MARRIAGE IS BETWEEN A MAN AND WOMEN AND ABORTION ISN'T LEGAL IN HIS EYES, FORGET ABOUT THAT AND VOTE FOR US CAUSE WE WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU POOR DISADVANTAGE PEOPLE WHO NEED THE GOVERNMENT TO SURIVE INSTEAD OF LOOKING TO GOD. WHEN OBAMA SAID GOVERNMENT IS THE ONLY SOLUTION, I BEG TO DEFER. GOD IS !
  • There's definitely something that needs to be done to bring the poor out of poverty.
