Cleansing the Hatred From Within

By Rabbi Marc Schneier and Russell Simmons

Yesterday’s fatal shooting of a security guard at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. was an American tragedy.  A tragedy that hurts every bone in the body of this country.   Although we have lived through many tragedies before, each one hurts like it was the first one.  But like every tragedy, there is always a lesson to be learned.

The start of this year marked a new beginning for this country – the United States elected its first African-American president.  While historic, a black man’s ascension to our nation’s highest office, of course, did not extinguish racism nor silence supremacists.  We are clearly not yet where we had hoped to be.  The reality is since President Obama took office, hate and hate groups in this country have been on the rise.  Last month, the FBI thwarted a plot by extremists who claim to be Muslim to bomb synagogues in the Bronx and shoot down military airplanes.

Seven days ago, President Obama visited the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany and spoke about the continuing intolerance of those who hate otherness, whether it be racial, sexual, or religious, a hatred “that degrades its victims and diminishes us all.”  He could not have known that only days later he would have to issue a statement condemning an atrocity that took place practically in his back yard in the very space where such acts are studied and recognized as present day threats.

Let yesterday’s attack be a wakeup call.  For us to be any sort of beacon of hope to the rest of the world, we must truly change ourselves.  We must take a deep look inside of who we are, and begin to transform our hatred to love. We do this by putting our foot down and saying enough is enough.  We do this through painful, honest dialogue.  We do this by working together.

Racism, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia are alive and well in America.  That we know.  That is what is so painful. But, let us not let the pain cloud our judgment.  We must work to let Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns’ legacy be a renewed commitment to fight the abhorrent racism that continues to plague our country.  Let us stop pointing fingers at others, and begin to truly examine ourselves and strive to a place of love and respect, rather than hate and tragedy.

Let us cleanse the hatred from within.

Perhaps in our eagerness to achieve the “post-racial” society, the harmonious bi-partisan governing, and all the ambitious goals we forgot that there is always effort that must be expended first. By coming together we are not already past or post anything; we are just beginning the process. What more can be done? The work is there waiting for us but maybe we can be less wary of it. We can change our trajectory and arrive at our destinations sooner, so long as the necessary steps of tolerance and understanding are taken.

The Holocaust Museum normally closes only on Yom Kippur and Christmas Day, but today it is closed in honor of Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns. But, our work continues long after the museum reopens.

Rabbi Marc Schneier and Russell Simmons are, respectively, President and Chairman of the The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, a national non-profit organization dedicated to promoting racial harmony and strengthening inter-group relations.

  • Blacks & Jews . . .

Why does Hate choose to be Prejudice by expressing its racism towards Blacks & Jews?

Only the Strong are slaves. When Jesus Christ was being torture, beaten, whipped, hated and spit on. So were the Blacks & Jews. We have alot in common.

Blacks & Jews are a reminder of Jesus Christ so of course hate will never love us, neither will Satan the Devil.

    Blacks & Jews, Forever Strong

  • PEOPLE IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE RACIST AND HAVE HATRED IN THEIR HEART. PEOPLE WHO ARE RACIST NOW TEACHES THEIR KIDS TO BE RACIST WHO TEACHES THIER KIDS BE RACIST AND SO ON. I SAY TEACH YOUR KID NOT BE RACIST TOWARDS ANY RACE BECAUSE ITS NOT JUST BLACK AND WHITE. IF PEOPLE KNEW THEIR HISTORY AND EVERY PERSON OF THEIR BLOOD LINE, WE WANT HAVE THIS PROBLEM. EVRY PERSON GOT A LITTLE BIT OF THE OTHER RACE IN THEM.
  • uncle rush,i think people hate on each other, because they need love in there hearts they need understanding and being accepted.that is a strong feeling to you all that love, then turn it into hate.i think they never got the right teaching, they were rasie by the the same people that never accept gods love.so i think people should talk out there anger.more in thie life at this moment. stop putting it off, tell the next time.we all no what right. we all no whats wrong.so we should step up and have that write as a human being to ask our pairs. what on your mind.lets talk about it.lets get to the cure of this.and you will see, how many people step up to the plate. and relate on how they feel as a human being living in this time.humans are scared to be hurt, to be let down.to be laughed at.to have lost. we all are just people love each other when you can talk to a person, when they feel let down, and lost, when you can tell them everything is ok trust in yourself, do you no how that person would feel he would feel like he just born again.so let open our hearts, because we all just people, humble human beings. looking for attension to be loved accepted into today world.i love all of you, uncle rush and revun and family you are my heros.peace a humble me
  • To extinguish a fire we must first smell the smoke. Unfortunately many of us are unaware of the effects of the past and the existence of prejudice. After all, we are all in some way guilty. Hence, the existence of a first impression. It takes a lifetime to truly get to know someone, yet we form opinions of people after a single encounter. Simply base on preconceived ideals, notions and stereo types. Many of us are only tolerant of one another because of the color of our goals. Barrack Obama may lead us through change, but true leadership comes through love. God IS love!

  • This post is to be recommended. Peace between black, white, yellow and mixes of the forthmentioned is a good thing.

Now if the Rabi starts addressing the racist treatment of the Palestinians in israel, we could all start to work for a peacful and positive new world.

Either way I have a lot of respect for Russel and the good work he does.

    Peace.
  • Well said but another example of the destructive times in which we live. Our streets are war zones, hate groups are taking in new members and planning who they can hurt daily. We say how sad it is and that it will not be tolerated but what are we doing to end this type of behavior? If we look at other cultures they realize the power and benefits of prayer and pray often spreading love instead of hate. Here we are in 2009 with little to no God or prayer in our lives and are shocked by this behavior. Hey guess what until we turn from our wicked ways, put God back in our lives respect and love each other this will continue. If we live by Martin's example and everyday live a better life then the day before we will get there. Violence, hatred, greed, disrespect, making excuses is front and center today it is wrong we glorify the wrong things and keep the right things hidden. The worse part of this we have children who are growing up and in a country filled with hatred instead of peace and love. We must wake up and see things for what they really are today and it is not cute.

  • Although we have come so far even in the last 20 years in America we are still so far off from where we should be as a nation and as a world. I do see progress though and I think America is a better place every day. I couldn't imagine my life without all of my friends from different cultures and countries. I feel bad for those who just dont understand how much they are missing by spreading hatred and I feel really bad for those born into the hate system.
  • Hatred of any kind is unacceptable, the more we try to reach hearts and minds we can win over ignornace and stupidity. My heart and prayers go to the Jewish community as they deal with the rise of antisemtism all over the globe.
  • Very well said...let's start to work on ourselves.
